Want to learn how to write your own songs? Unsure where to start? At Bach to Rock®, our beginner songwriting classes offer step-by-step instruction for new songwriters — even for students who’ve never played an instrument!

In Songwriting 101, students learn the basics of how to write music over the course of 10 weekly classes. We offer a fun and supportive environment where students can express their creativity. Class duration is 45 minutes.

Small class sizes ensure plenty of one-on-one instruction and feedback for each student. Our classes are available in-person and online, so that students have the option of attending from home!

Smaller classes also allow us to teach songwriters of different skill levels. This makes our group songwriting lessons a great choice for amateur composers who want to refine their talents or learn new tricks of the trade.

Songwriting Classes for Beginners

If you’ve never written music before, crafting your own songs can feel like a daunting task. Songwriting 101 offers a roadmap for aspiring songsmiths, giving them the fundamental tools they need to write their own music.

In our beginner songwriting lessons, students learn the basics of writing music, including song structure, key, tempo, melody, and harmony. We adjust the curriculum based on each student’s skill level and experience. This way, even experienced musicians get to learn new skills and refine their talents.

Our songwriting classes help students find their own unique voice. We teach a wide range of genres and encourage students to explore their musical interests in songwriting.

By the end of the program, each student will have written an original song. Students can also learn how to produce their song in our beginner dj class.

Introduce Your Child to Music (Ages 6-7)

For kids, the chance to make music isn’t just fun — it’s also uniquely helpful in early childhood development. While Songwriting 101 is only open to ages 8+, we encourage younger students to build music-making skills in Fun with Music. This program helps students build foundational music skills and try out a range of instruments!

Bach to Rock offers a wide range of music programs, including lessons for all ages and skill levels!

Our private lessons include programs for piano, guitar, bass, ukulele, drums, and voice, as well as brass, string, and woodwind instruments.

We also offer group classes — including beginner classes like Piano 101, Guitar 101, and Voice 101 — plus ensemble programs like Band and Glee Club.

Pricing for Bach to Rock music lessons depends on the type and duration of lesson. You can find up-to-date pricing and schedules for all of our programs through our online sign up system. Pricing may vary by location.

All Bach to Rock students must have access to their own instruments for at-home practice.

Bach to Rock is more than happy to advise parents and students on instrument purchases. We can recommend local stores that sell high-quality instruments for a reasonable price.

We also have wholesale contracts with instrument manufacturers and suppliers. This allows us to provide instruments at a discount to parents and students who purchase them from us.

A list of recommended instruments and accessories is available for all parents and students.

While students must have their own instruments for at-home practice, Bach to Rock will generally provide students with instruments for in-school lessons.

Drums, guitars, keyboards, and support equipment (such as amplifiers) will always be supplied by the school. This way, students don’t have to transport bulky equipment to and from lessons.

As students advance, they may feel more comfortable using their own instruments for lessons at Bach to Rock. Students are encouraged to bring their own instruments to school for lessons when possible.

Note that we do not provide wind or orchestral instruments such as clarinets, flutes, saxophones, or violins.

It's never too early to get kids started with music! At Bach to Rock, we encourage parents to start music classes early in childhood, so that kids can enjoy the developmental benefits of music education.

Our programs include Rock n Roll (ages 1-3), Rock City® (ages 3-5), Kids n Keys (ages 5-7), and Fun with Music (ages 6-7). Our early childhood classes help prepare students for private music lessons as they grow older.

We recommend starting private lessons at age 7. This is the age when most students are able to read sheet music — an important skill for private lessons.
